On September 11, 2004, the Alumni Association of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf held a golf outing at the Cedarbrook Golf Course. Thirty-one golfers attended to play four-players scrambles. Scrambles are very popular for golf outing because all players can help the team, regardless of their skills. The game’s purpose is to acquire the lowest score for the round. Each player hits a tee shot. After selecting the best drive, the other players on the team pick up their balls and hit the second shot. After choosing the best second shot, all players hit from that position. The procedure continues for every shot until the hole is completed.
The winning team consisted of Tim Hawkins, Sr; Tim Hawkins, Jr; Tracy Hawkins; and Ed Fike with the lowest score of -2. Mike Davies wedged the ball 139 yards on the 11th hole for the closet pin. Father and son, Andy and Joe Kovach won the longest drive on the 6th and 10th hole, respectively. The President of AAWPSD, James DeBee won the sweet and short drive on the 1st hole. There were five wonderful door prizes awarded to some of the participants. Hey, even the “Old Farts” joined with us to play golf. It was good to see them, they were James Salem, former Asst’ Superintendent; Barry Fell, former Materials Adapter/Evaluator; and Greg Bowers, Dean of Students. We are looking forward to seeing all of the golfers and more staff from WPSD for the 5th annual WPSD Cup in September 2005.
