Obituary: Charles Leon Smith, Class of ’75

Charles Leon SmithCharles Leon “Chuck” Smith, age 59, of St. Augustine, passed away on August 1, 2014 at Flagler Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Chuck was born and grew up in Brookville, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, and graduated from National Technology Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York. While at NTID, Chuck met his wife to be, Ann Tillis. They married in St. Augustine and lived their early married life in Brookville, Pa. before moving to St. Augustine in 1981. Chuck worked as a machinist for the U.S. Navy at NAS Jacksonville for more than 32 years. He was a longtime member of Anastasia Baptist Church where he served as an usher, greeter, a leader in the deaf ministry and played on the church softball team. Chuck was very active in the lives of his children, and enjoyed coaching his kid’s sports teams as they were growing up. His community involvement included serving as President of the Deaf Club. Chuck was outgoing and gregarious, had a wonderful smile and was well known and loved. More than anything, he was a devoted husband and father and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Smith, of St. Augustine; daughters, Tara Roman (Emmanuel) and Tessa Smith, and sons, Travis Smith and Trevin Smith, all of St. Augustine; his parents Leon and Gale Smith of Brookville Pennsylvania; siblings, Cathy Silvis (Mike) of Brookville, Pa., Clifford “Cliff” Smith (Karen) of Virginia and Carrie Park (Ryan) of Brooksville, Pa. and grandchildren, Jayden and Kylie

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9th 2014 at Anastasia Baptist Church, with Dr. Walter West officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Chuck’s memory can be made to: Anastasia Baptist Church Building Fund, 1650 A1A South, St. Augustine, Florida 32080.
