Since The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf opened 147 years ago, thousands of students have passed through these doors. Today, as it was in 1869, the goal is to produce graduates who achieve their dreams and positively impact society.

For this edition of The Western Pennsylvanian, we attempted to find out what the more than 350 graduates from 1995-2015 are doing now. Thanks in large part to social media, we were able to connect with many of our graduates and this is what we discovered.

Our Alumni aer doing many, many different things…

They are in school – Gallaudet, NTID/RIT, University of Maryland, George Mason University, Penn State, community colleges, and technical schools. They are working on master’s degrees, doctorates, bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees and a wide variety of certifications.

They are majoring in education, medicine, computer technology, business administration, graphic arts, sociology, engineering, chemistry and economics.

Our graduates work for the Department of Defense, the FBI, universities, Schools for the Deaf, financial institutions, construction companies, machine shops, public school districts, government agencies, hospitals, social service agencies, retail stores and nursing homes.

They repair computers, cars and HVAC systems, walk dogs, stock shelves, build houses, style hair, drive trucks, and take pictures.

Our graduates are mothers and fathers. They are business owners, artists, web designers, teachers, caregivers, social workers, carpenters, fashion designers, therapists, engineers, farmers and electricians.

They are, for the most part, accomplished, productive, well-rounded citizens. We are very proud of each and every one of them!
