Students at the Western Pennsylvania School of the Deaf had a lot to cheer about Thursday as they celebrated the school’s championship volleyball and soccer teams.
Teammates ran into the gym holding their trophies to the roar of the crowd.
“Truly, it’s indescribable, the feeling, and you can see it on the cameras,” Valentine Wojton III, the school’s athletic director and soccer coach, communicated through an American Sign Language interpreter.
This was the third year in a row the school won the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association championship in both soccer and volleyball, extending the historic streak. The Edgewood-based school competes against schools from Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine.
Cheyanne Sloan, a senior on the volleyball team, said winning the championship was emotional.
“It’s my last year, and I’m going to miss my teammates,” she communicated through an American Sign Language interpreter.
