Bert C. Shaposka, 82, of Youngstown, Ohio, formerly of California, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020.
He was born Thursday, Jan. 20, 1938, in Brownsville, son of the late Alexander and Grace Hormell Shaposka. Mr. Shaposka was born with normal hearing and became deaf when he contracted spinal meningitis at the age of 8 in 1946.
His life was heavily influenced by his hearing disability. He was educated at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Pittsburgh, received his Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Gallaudet College, in Washington, D.C., and his Master of Arts in American History from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Shaposka worked for the federal government in the Library of Congress, was a writer-editor for the National Archives and retired as an administrator for the General Services Administration Information Resources Management Service.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory are his brothers and sisters, Harry M. Shaposka of Brownsville, Beatrice Riggs of The Villages, Fla., Alexis Little of Valrico, Fla., and David A. Shaposka of Charleroi. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and a special nephew, Brian Little.
Friends will be received for a graveside service in Phillipsburg Cemetery, California, Pa., at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020, with the Rev. Amory Merriman officiating.
