The Rev. Gary Avery, 84, of Stoneboro passed away on Nov. 12, 2023, at Quality Life Services of New Castle.

Born in New Castle on Sept. 15, 1939, Gary was the son of the late William and Elcetha (Pierce) Avery. On March 28, 1997, Gary married his beloved wife, the former Rebekah Ann Clark. She survives at home. Gary had worked for 33 years for Consolidated Glass as a glass cutter.

He graduated from Western Pennsylvania School f/t Deaf in 1958. Then, he was a graduate of Transylvania Bible School of Freeport and Adirondack Bible School in New York where he received his preaching license.

He was a member of the Evangelical Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Gary was an avid reader. He loved animals and enjoyed tending to his garden.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Gary’s greatest joy was the time he spent with his family.

In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by his children, Rebekah Ann Felsing, Stephen Avery, Deborah Avery, the Rev. Gary Avery II, Elizabeth Russell, Nathanel Avery, Rachel Avery, Isaac Avery, Patricia Avery, Timothy Avery and Bonnie Avery; one brother, Robert Avery; two sisters, Beverly Conway and Sally Birchfield; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin; one sister; his brother, Lawrence Avery; and his first wife of 25 years, the former Ann Rooks.

Visitation will be on 4-7 p.m. Monday at Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St.
A funeral will be held on at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Benjamin Yauger will officiate.
Burial will be in Savannah Cemetery.
