Ryan S. Hawkins, a shining star in the lives of all who knew him, was taken from us far too soon on May 1, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 6, 1988, Ryan was the cherished son of Wes (WPSD ’78) and Marci (Sheppeck, WPSD ‘81) Hawkins.

Ryan’s educational journey began at Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) in 1991, where he spent five formative years before moving to Indiana. He went on to graduate from Indiana School for the Deaf in 2007, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. Ryan further pursued his passion for education at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business in 2012.

Ryan’s first professional path led him to Colorado where he worked for Sorensen Communications LLC and then the Colorado Commission for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deafblind for several years. He later returned to Indiana and joined the team at Indiana School for the Deaf. Ryan’s dedication to his community and passion for helping others left a lasting impact on all who worked alongside him.

Ryan is survived by his loving family: his parents, Wes and Marci; his brother, Drew (Enrolled); his sister, Paige (Enrolled); his sunshine nephew Ryder, his maternal grandmother, Sandra Sheppeck; his aunts and uncles, William and Cindy Sheppeck, Bob and Kelly Sheppeck, Daniel (WPSD ’91) and Maria Sheppeck, Timothy and Darlene Hawkins, Mark and Jodi (Hawkins, WPSD ’82) Seres, and Jason Hawkins; and numerous cousins. His beloved dog, Arya, also mourns the loss of his dear companion.

Ryan was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Robert Sheppeck, and his paternal grandparents, Fred and Pat Hawkins.

Ryan’s love for the outdoors, woodworking, and community service inspired countless individuals. His infectious smile and boundless energy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him. Ryan’s life may have been cut short, but his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Ryan. Your memory will be a blessing to all.
