The WPSD Alumni Association presented Mark Kite, Sr. with the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year award. Mark was recognized for his remarkable accomplishments and dedication to service at a celebratory dinner prior to the Commencement Ceremony on June 6, 2024.

Mark’s academic journey began at WPSD, followed by his graduation from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) in 1980, where he earned a degree in Manufacturing Processing. He began working at Youngwood Electronic Metals, where he spent 11 years before being laid off.  He then embarked on a career at WPSD, spanning 33 years, serving in various roles, including Residential Counselor from 1992-2003, Fleet Driver from 2003 to present, and promoted to Fleet Coordinator since 2021. Additionally, Mark coached mighty mite soccer team and basketball team 1991-1995 and high school track team 1992-2003 and as well as held the position of treasurer for the WPSD Parents Organization. During the summer, he had side jobs, including driving a dump truck, truck driver, and operating heavy equipment since 1999.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mark has made a significant impact in his community. He comes from a family of firefighters, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and two brothers. With 47 years of service as a volunteer firefighter at Yukon-South Huntingdon Volunteer Fire Co. in his hometown of Yukon, Westmoreland County, he made history by becoming the first Deaf Fire Chief in the region, state, and possibly the nation. He is actively involved and supports his hometown volunteer organizations.

Mark’s personal life is marked by a loving marriage of 44 years to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Frank, also a 1978 WPSD graduate. Together, they have two children, Bobbie Jo Kite Herbold (1999) and Mark, Jr. (2003), two grandsons, and two granddogs.

In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting in Potter County, riding his ATV, NASCAR and Florida beach. Also, he is an active member of many organizations such as PAD Club, Yukon Lion Club, Wyano Vets, Fort Allen Club 104, West Newton Sportsman Club, Snpj Club, American Legion Post 258 and Western PA of Wounded Warriors.

On behalf of the WPSD Alumni Association, we are delighted to recognize Mark Kite, Sr., for his outstanding achievements, commitment to service, and inspiring life story. Congratulations, Mark!
