In Memoriam: Sandi (Kayner) Kitchen

Sandra Jane (Kayner) Kitchen, 60, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024. She was born Aug. 6, 1963, in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late John L. and Ardath (Anderson) Kayner. She was a graduate of Mercyhurst Preparatory School, Erie, and worked for 41 years at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD).

While working at WPSD, she was an advisor for the Girls’ Athletic Association, active in coaching girls’ volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Prior to retirement, her most recent position was administrative assistant to the principal.

Sandra enjoyed knitting and other crafts, and when able over the years, she enjoyed traveling. She had attended Word of Life Ministries and Living Waters Family Worship Center. She was a leader of the Unstoppable Saints Youth Ministry Team, Cornerstone Ministries, and she was involved in Clown Ministry, at Word of Life Church. Sandra had strong Christian Faith and enjoyed going on mission trips, her favorite was traveling to South Dakota to do mission work with the Lakota Sioux Tribe in Mission, South Dakota.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jamie Kitchen; brother, Steve J. (Amy) Kayner; and niece, AnnaTheresa J. Kayner.

Friends and family will be received from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, at the FORGIE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Broadway Ave., East McKeesport, 412-823-8083.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be held Monday, June 24, 2024, in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park. By now, most of you already know that WPSD’s beloved Sandi Kanyer Kitchen has passed away. Sandi died on Sunday, June 16th in the hospital at the age of 60.

Sandi began working at WPSD in the fall of 1982 as a houseparent in the girls’ dorm. She eventually moved into verious positions, working as secretary in the high school department and working in the front office. She retired last year – 2023.

She was thoroughly loved by staff and students at WPSD and would always greet everyone with a smile, ready to help anyone with anything that they needed.

Sandi was married to her loving husband, Jamie Kitchen, who was a 1994 WPSD graduate.
